Firstly, let me apologise for taking our leave so hastily that we were unable to thank you personally yesterday morning. It was the occasion of my son's graduation at York and I wanted it to be a "special day" which, staying at Burythorpe, certainly made it so.
We had simply the best time. Nothing was too much trouble and, indeed, due to someone going off with the key to the room I had booked, I was upgraded to the most fabulous room I have ever had the pleasure to stay in! The ROOMS, the SETTING, the FOOD, (simply the best halibut ever!)made this the BEST HOTEL EVER, so worth the small journey from York through beautiful rolling countryside.
Alas our stay was brief but we fully intend to come back soon. I could not recommend anywhere else more. Thank you so very much, my son is still telling all his friends about it.
With every best wish Carole Lis

Gorgeous country hotel with easy access by car to York, Whitby, Scarborough etc - Anon

We stayed 4 nights, beautiful small country hotel. Our room was gorgeous and the bed was so so so very comfortable (we were in Fountains room), bathroom was amazing, I would love one at home like this! Lots of lovely little touches - real coffee in room, choice of still or sparkling water in room, molton brown toiletries, iron and ironing board. We were in the middle sized room but to me it was huge!
We are not breakfast goers so didn't go for breakfast but had dinner in hotel two nights, it is more expensive than going for your standard bar meal etc but for a treat on holiday, it was really fine dining to us and was lovely. OMG the chocolate fondant is to die for, I had it both nights, thank you chef! And i thought chicken was chicken but my chicken for main was amazing too. My mouth is watering at the thought of it! I would definitely recommend this hotel though and would stay again.
Thank you.

Fantastic Stay - Anon

A friendly hotel in a wonderfully quiet setting. We loved the fact that there was a pool, gym and tennis courts on the premises.
The mobility requirements yet again didn't seem to come through on the booking but the receptionist/manager looked after us with complimentary drinks whilst they made up the accessible room. This room actually had a toilet leak so we had to move to a first floor room anyway. This was probably a blessing as this room was superior in every way. Fantastic double aspect views of the grounds and surrounding fields. We used this as a base for house hunting over 5 days so we only ate in the restaurant once and took the room only rate, which was very good value for the overall quality of the hotel.
If I was going to suggest 1 thing - it would benefit from a bar, although all drinks are available in the lounge, and moreover a bar menu so you could eat something if you didn't fancy a full restaurant meal. Its probably not seen as necessary as you can get that from its 'sister' establishment, the Bay Horse pub 500 yards away.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you for looking after my wife & I last weekend. You all made us feel extremely welcome, and made our short stay with you as relaxing as it could possibly have been. Both my wife & I felt it more like stopping with friends we had known for years rather than a hotel miles from home ! The room was perfect & well prepared for us & the sight of a lovely log fire burning brightly after coming in from the cold Yorkshire rain was a sight to wonder at !
I would like to say a special thank you to "Ally" ( I hope I have spelt the name right) for her welcome & also affording us the time to show us around before we left, she has a rare talent for putting people at ease and is a credit & asset to your establishment.
Finally I would just like to say again - you have a beautiful house in exceptional surroundings, with a wonderful staff. I would not hesitate to recommend your hotel & will almost certainly be visiting again.

A friend and I decided we needed to escape the christmas 'hurly burly' for one night. We stumbled upon this hidden gem when searching through one of those last min web sites. Little gem it was ,from checking in to check out we felt so at home. No stuffy staff here nothing is a bother. We were shown to our ground floor room(I have recently ruptured my achilles tendon and find stairs a problem). we had our own front door into the hotel with an internal door straight into the dinning room.
The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard we could find no fault at all here.(not that we were looking for faults mind you!) . We settled ourselves in front of a roaring fire read newspapers and had afternoom tea. We were told by our lovely hotess that they had ran out of scones but if i was prepared to wait chef would put a fresh batch in! you just wouldn't get this kind of service in some faceless hotel chain. I might add they were warm and served with what looked like home made jam.
we then availed ourselves of the leisure facilities. Now don't be expecting 5* because it's not.The pool looks like it has been included in the refurb but the sauna ,gym and changing rooms are quite basic. Maybe these are next on the list for an update? Having said that it was still quite quaint and didn't deflect from our high opinion of this place.
The food...........oh my god!every dish was presented beautifully and tasted better than anything I have tasted before.(nearly a"Harry met Sally moment" it was so good) The staff were unobtrusive I have to say the best meal I have ever been served. I have eaten in the White Room at Seaham hall which has 1 michellin star and this food 'knocked that into a cocked hat'.
Plan to revisit Burythorpe House early in the new year and could not praise this hotel enough no the wonder it won the Yorkshire Life small and friendly award . This will not be it's last award of that I am sure.
Liked — It's small and friendly take on things.
Disliked — nothing

Everybody said what a superb place the hotel was, also the food, and the staff. They all really enjoyed it, and would be very keen to come again (both with the business and privately). Thank you to you and all your team for looking after them so well.

Stayed at Burythorpe house on the 1st Nov for my partner’s birthday. The room (Rievaulx) was traditional, spacious and very clean. The staff were very friendly and down to earth. The food was absolutely fantastic and surpassed my expectation, being better than some Michelin star restaurants we have ate at. Only the day before we stayed in a 4 star, Burythorpe House was a much nicer experience altogether. My suggestion would be to book soon as i believe when the accolades start coming for the hotel it will be much harder to guarantee a room.
Would I recommend this hotel to my best friend?
absolutely!
I recommend this hotel for:
An amazing honeymoon, A romantic getaway, Girlfriend getaway, Older travelers, Tourists
I selected this hotel as a top choice for:
Museums / Cultural / Historical sites, Great food / Wine
