Came here yesterday for afternoon tea, staff very friendly excellent service, will definitely call again at every opportunity. Perfect spot for refreshment during drive in local empty country roads with picturesque landscapes.
Luck or Fate? A brilliant find!
Unusually we left booking our anniversary break till the last minute, due to a number of family issues and it wasn't till the day we travelled 2nd August that we booked this 2 night stay.
Fantastic! We stayed in the Kirkham room on the 3rd floor with dual aspect. The room was superb with a large bathroom and shower, it could do with a paint refresh ( but guess what the 3rd floor rooms are being renovated starting this week so they will be even better then)
We had Dinner, Bed and Breakfast every meal was spot on with a good selection and the evening meal menu was changed each night. Wine list is also great starting at £22.
Service throughout was fantastic and all staff were very welcoming and made you feel at home.
So if you want a quiet hideaway with good food - look no further!
Lovely hotel and gorgeous food
We stayed at this hotel as a stop on the way to collect our daughter from Newcastle University. We used a travelzoo voucher and stayed for dinner bed and breakfast. The room was very individual and bathroom was large with Molton Brown toiletries which smelled divine. The restaurant was lovely and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was one of the best meals I have had and presented beautifully. The surroundings of the hotel were lovely and no vehicle noise at all. A small tame chaffinch decided to ask for some biscuit crumbs at the window of our room and the view over the countryside was lovely with the village chuch on a hill in the distance.
One to return to
We stayed at the hotel Spring Bank Holiday Monday and the following, it was the first time we had used this hotel and indeed and it proved a good experience all round. The hotel is a little remote but that suited us; formerly a country house with only 12 bedrooms, it is furnished and decorated to a good standard. Our room, "Kirkham" was very pleasant and the the food excellent, the menu wasn't extensive but it was changed each day and the wine list was to a good and reasonable value too. The staff were exceptional and we will certainly return, there is plenty to see and do in the part of the world and I foresee multiple visits are justified.
Beautiful Country House
We have just returned to Scotland from a two night stay at Burythorpe House. I cannot recommend highly enough this Country House. It was beautiful (even though renovations were ongoing) the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful and the food was superb. This has definitely been one of the best deals we have had and we would not hesitate to go there again. It was well worth travelling 400 odd miles to find such a wonderful country house. Even the bed was comfortable which is quite unusual when you are away from home.
Our thanks to all the staff at Burythorpe House for making our two day break so wonderful.
Fabulous Boutique Hotel
I bought this stay at Burythorpe (via Travelzoo) as a gift for my partner and her sister. They had a wonderful visit to the hotel which set in beautiful grounds. The food was exceptional!
All the staff were excellent but a special note of thanks to 'Sherpa' Luke for carrying all the bags to Mt. Grace. Also, to Monika who made the trip so special. She is a credit to the hotel and couldn't do enough to make the stay perfect.
Burythorpe House - a real find
Thanks to travelzoo and the desire to have fish & chips in Whitby we took a round trip into Yorkshire and stayed one night at Burythorpe House; what a find! One of the nicest, cleanest and most tasteful boutique hotels we have stayed in. A really pleasant welcome from Monika, beautiful room (Fountains) and an absolutely fabulous dinner - compliments to the chef. Comfortable and relaxing sleep, majestic shower, great breakfast
First Class, thanks
Amazing country retreat 5 stars all round
Cant get over the fantastic surroundings at this lovely hotel. Staff were fantastic and could not have made you more welcome from the time my partner and i arrived. Food was out of this world and our room was really wonderful the Jervaulx with a huge bed and wonderful views. We will definately return to enjoy all thats on offer by this very well run country house. Thank you again David & Jenny Mckelvay
Couldn't be faulted!
What a wonderful break we have just had. I rang to try and book 2 nights but they could not accommodate us so we resolved to stay for one in the hope that a second night might become available. Within an hour we had an email to say that they had upgraded us (Jervaulx room) and would honour the second night on the Travelzoo promotion rate as well. A good start!
From the moment we walked in Monica made us welcome and gave us the kind of service and hospitality that you dream about.
Food was sublime at both dinner and breakfast. When I couldn't decide which of two desserts Monica promised that chef would put my second choice on for our second evening...and he did! She also supplied me with the recipe so that I can make it myself at home.
Room was wonderful (floorboards creaked a bit but it added to the character) the view and tranquillity was pretty special and it was spotlessly clean.
Refurbishment is still going on (pool currently closed) but when it is complete this hotel will be very very special indeed
Have just returned from Burythorpe House where we stayed one night for DB&B. We loved everything about it - the caring, efficient staff, the delicious food, the newly refurbished room we were allocated and the relaxing, peaceful ambience of the house itself. Excellent value for money and we will most certainly be heading back there in the near future.
A little gem!
We have just returned from a very relaxing 2 night stay at this wonderful country house. It is beautifully situated, and we relaxed as soon as we walked through the door! The staff are just so friendly and accommodating, a real credit to the hotel. Our room, Jerveaux was simply stunning with the biggest and most comfortable sleigh bed I have ever seen. The food is superb and we were reluctant to leave - we will certainly be back and would recommend it to everyone. Wonderful and by far the best short break we have had this year.
Secret Hideaway Hotel
My husband and I and two friends have just returned from two wonderful days at the Burythorpe Hotel. This is our first visit but it will not be the last. The hotel is currently under refurbishment, as it stands now the rooms are amazing. (Can`t wait to see them when it`s finished). We stayed in Bylands which was huge, with a large bathroom and stunning views across the Yorkshire Wolds. The staff are so welcoming nothing is too much trouble, they make you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door until you leave. They have a brilliant chef who makes the most fab scrambled eggs and the dinner menu deserves five stars. The day we were leaving we went for a walk and it started to rain. When we returned to the hotel to collect the car we were soaked and asked if we could change our clothes in the toilets. We were offered a room and the facilities to have a shower and when we returned to the lounge area, the lovely staff had provided us with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. This attention just sums up the end of two lovely days at this amazing hotel.

One night stay birthday treat

Mid week break
Warm welcome on arrival, informed we had been upgraded to a superior room. The room was excellent, very spacious as was the bathroom. We had an evening meal which was very well cooked and presented. There was also an excellent wine list. The lounge was also spacious and comfortable. There was a very good breakfast selection and everything was served at the table. The breakfast was very well cooked the ingredients were sourced locally and very tasty. My wife and I could not fault the hotel and would highly recommend it.
Great hotel with excellent food
We stayed for a night and had a really lovely time. All the staff were really friendly and couldn't do enough to help. The room was very spacious, comfortable and clean. The evening meal was superb as was the breakfast. The menu was varied and contained a vegetarian option. There is a very pleasant and relaxing lounge area for guests to enjoy and plenty of outdoor space if the weather is good. A member of staff recommended a walk and printed a copy of for us. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.
A HIDDEN 5 STAR GEM!!!!
Just stayed in Burythorpe House on a Groupon voucher for 1 night DB&B and I cannot praise this place enough!!
The staff that are managed by Monica are a complete delight.
They have a set menu for dinner that costs £30.00 per head and let me tell you this is a gift!!!
I'm telling you the chef serves food that is not only top quality but looks like it has been served from a top class London restaurant!!!!
I can't recommend this hotel enough and if you're lucky enough to get a cheap Groupon deal then you'll never want to leave the place.
One point to note is that at present there are minor refurbishment works being carried out but this certainly won't affect your stay.
You must visit this hotel for a 5 star experience!!!
Worth a visit
Burythorpe House is a lovely palace to stay, in a very relaxing and quiet village. All the staff were friendly and helpful and we received a warm welcome. Our room -Mount Grace was on the top floor and it was clean, spacious and the bed was luxurious!
We both really enjoyed our evening meal-a good selection to choose from (I highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding) accompanied by a nice bottle of wine (no bottle was under £20 but the one we chose was certainly worth the money).
Breakfast was delicious, clearly local and good quality ingredients are used here.
Hint-the village pub is a 5 minute walk away and has draught beer-it's worth a visit for some pre-dinner drinks as the hotel does not offer beer on draught.
Although we used a Travelzoo voucher, I would consider visiting again and paying full price.
Such a lovely spot!!
Went with my husband and family to visit friends. This little place is just lovely. Luxurious and welcoming. With the most supurb breakfast in the morning and lovely decadent G&Ts in the lounge in the evening. All in all cant wait to get back! Loved it thanks to all the super staff.
Brilliant stay! Would Reccomend.
We booked this hotel as a last minute deal for a weekend away in Yorkshire. We were overall very impressed with the hotel, staff and food! The room was clean and very well decorated - some small signs of wear and tear but nothing we weren't able to overlook for such a reasonable price!
The food was lovely, a good selection and was piping hot! Would give this hotel five stars and we will defiantly return in future. Thanks!
A Peaceful Oasis
We were recommended to this hotel by friends of ours, we were not disappointed. We travelled up on one of our recent miserable rainy days but immediately on entering the hotel it felt like a different world. A nice roaring fire in the lounge and soon shown to our room, by a very helpful lovely lady The room had a view over the front gardens but nice and quiet. The room itself had a very large bed plus all amenities, tea coffee and snacks etc. Bathroom was equipped with a roll top bath and separate walk in shower complete with top quality toiletries. We were based on a bed breakfast and evening meal. Before the evening meal, we had pre dinner drinks in the lounge next to the roaring fire. The menu was very varied it was a difficult choice as it all looked inviting. After starting with the chefs surprise my wife chose wood pigeon as a starter and guinea- fowl to follow, she said both were cooked to perfection. I myself choose scallops and main course Gressingham duck, both delicious. I finished off with a good selection of cheeses and my wife had the chocolate posset. We then retired back to the lounge for coffee and chocolates. After a good night’s sleep in a comfortable bed we went down for breakfast. Again, everything you could wish for including fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit salads and full cooked breakfast. I must say I haven't had better eggs or bacon any where very very fresh. All the staff were very friendly and professional. It was only on getting ready to leave the hotel that we were told they were doing a full make over, room by room. This is one hotel that we will certainly be returning to in the not too distant, hopefully with better weather, because in this part of Yorkshire there is plenty to see. The hotel is slightly off the beaten track but certainly well worth seeking out. Certainly recommend. Josh and Joan G Saddleworth.

Burythorpe is an idyllic village approaching the Howardian Hills, in quite beautiful Yorkshire Wolds countryside. The food at Burythorpe is absolutely excellent, the ambience exceptionally civilised and comfortable. The service is faultless. I have not stayed overnight as it's a bit too near my house to justify the expense (unfortunately). There are several shoots in the area, one of the nearest being at Place Newton (Winteringham) where the pheasants have airline tickets but as a relatively inexperienced and mediocre shot I did manage to hit a few.
Before Christmas my partner and I went to dinner here. I had unsuccessful root canal surgery that morning and was feeling dreadful having taken large doses of antibiotics and analgesia, I was still virtually unable to chew. The waitress at my request provided half size portions of the set dishes that night - and charged us half price for them. I can't wait to go back.
What a find!
What a superb, superb place to stay.
Very welcoming, accommodating and lovely staff, we could have asked for more.
Amazing room and service, only wished we could have stayed longer.
Short winter break
This is my favourite hotel anywhere. When we stopped for the umpteenth time we were the only g.uests. Nevertheless we were feted with a beautiful candlelit dinner. They ran out of my favourite beer and nipped to the local pub for it. A wonderful place. Monica was excellent. Good breakfast too.
Our room featured a sleigh bed... very comfy. Only fault was shower curtain too short to prevent wetting floor.... but there were towels in abundance replaced next morning. We shall return yet again. They never disappoint.
This was an excellent experience. the hotel was peaceful and very comfortable. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. I would recommend this to couples who want to get away from it all. I feel much rested and would give this hotel 10 out of 10.
Firstly, let me apologise for taking our leave so hastily that we were unable to thank you personally yesterday morning. It was the occasion of my son's graduation at York and I wanted it to be a "special day" which, staying at Burythorpe, certainly made it so.
We had simply the best time. Nothing was too much trouble and, indeed, due to someone going off with the key to the room I had booked, I was upgraded to the most fabulous room I have ever had the pleasure to stay in! The ROOMS, the SETTING, the FOOD, (simply the best halibut ever!)made this the BEST HOTEL EVER, so worth the small journey from York through beautiful rolling countryside.
Alas our stay was brief but we fully intend to come back soon. I could not recommend anywhere else more. Thank you so very much, my son is still telling all his friends about it.
With every best wish Carole Lis
Gorgeous country hotel with easy access by car to York, Whitby, Scarborough etc - Anon
We stayed 4 nights, beautiful small country hotel. Our room was gorgeous and the bed was so so so very comfortable (we were in Fountains room), bathroom was amazing, I would love one at home like this! Lots of lovely little touches - real coffee in room, choice of still or sparkling water in room, molton brown toiletries, iron and ironing board. We were in the middle sized room but to me it was huge!
We are not breakfast goers so didn't go for breakfast but had dinner in hotel two nights, it is more expensive than going for your standard bar meal etc but for a treat on holiday, it was really fine dining to us and was lovely. OMG the chocolate fondant is to die for, I had it both nights, thank you chef! And i thought chicken was chicken but my chicken for main was amazing too. My mouth is watering at the thought of it! I would definitely recommend this hotel though and would stay again.
Fantastic Stay - Anon
A friendly hotel in a wonderfully quiet setting. We loved the fact that there was a pool, gym and tennis courts on the premises.
The mobility requirements yet again didn't seem to come through on the booking but the receptionist/manager looked after us with complimentary drinks whilst they made up the accessible room. This room actually had a toilet leak so we had to move to a first floor room anyway. This was probably a blessing as this room was superior in every way. Fantastic double aspect views of the grounds and surrounding fields. We used this as a base for house hunting over 5 days so we only ate in the restaurant once and took the room only rate, which was very good value for the overall quality of the hotel.
If I was going to suggest 1 thing - it would benefit from a bar, although all drinks are available in the lounge, and moreover a bar menu so you could eat something if you didn't fancy a full restaurant meal. Its probably not seen as necessary as you can get that from its 'sister' establishment, the Bay Horse pub 500 yards away.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you for looking after my wife & I last weekend. You all made us feel extremely welcome, and made our short stay with you as relaxing as it could possibly have been. Both my wife & I felt it more like stopping with friends we had known for years rather than a hotel miles from home ! The room was perfect & well prepared for us & the sight of a lovely log fire burning brightly after coming in from the cold Yorkshire rain was a sight to wonder at !
I would like to say a special thank you to "Ally" ( I hope I have spelt the name right) for her welcome & also affording us the time to show us around before we left, she has a rare talent for putting people at ease and is a credit & asset to your establishment.
Finally I would just like to say again - you have a beautiful house in exceptional surroundings, with a wonderful staff. I would not hesitate to recommend your hotel & will almost certainly be visiting again.

A friend and I decided we needed to escape the christmas 'hurly burly' for one night. We stumbled upon this hidden gem when searching through one of those last min web sites. Little gem it was ,from checking in to check out we felt so at home. No stuffy staff here nothing is a bother. We were shown to our ground floor room(I have recently ruptured my achilles tendon and find stairs a problem). we had our own front door into the hotel with an internal door straight into the dinning room. The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard we could find no fault at all here.(not that we were looking for faults mind you!) . We settled ourselves in front of a roaring fire read newspapers and had afternoom tea. We were told by our lovely hotess that they had ran out of scones but if i was prepared to wait chef would put a fresh batch in! you just wouldn't get this kind of service in some faceless hotel chain. I might add they were warm and served with what looked like home made jam. we then availed ourselves of the leisure facilities. Now don't be expecting 5* because it's not.The pool looks like it has been included in the refurb but the sauna ,gym and changing rooms are quite basic. Maybe these are next on the list for an update? Having said that it was still quite quaint and didn't deflect from our high opinion of this place. The food...........oh my god!every dish was presented beautifully and tasted better than anything I have tasted before.(nearly a"Harry met Sally moment" it was so good) The staff were unobtrusive I have to say the best meal I have ever been served. I have eaten in the White Room at Seaham hall which has 1 michellin star and this food 'knocked that into a cocked hat'. Plan to revisit Burythorpe House early in the new year and could not praise this hotel enough no the wonder it won the Yorkshire Life small and friendly award . This will not be it's last award of that I am sure.
Liked — It's small and friendly take on things.
Disliked — nothing

Everybody said what a superb place the hotel was, also the food, and the staff. They all really enjoyed it, and would be very keen to come again (both with the business and privately). Thank you to you and all your team for looking after them so well.

Stayed at Burythorpe house on the 1st Nov for my partner’s birthday. The room (Rievaulx) was traditional, spacious and very clean. The staff were very friendly and down to earth. The food was absolutely fantastic and surpassed my expectation, being better than some Michelin star restaurants we have ate at. Only the day before we stayed in a 4 star, Burythorpe House was a much nicer experience altogether. My suggestion would be to book soon as i believe when the accolades start coming for the hotel it will be much harder to guarantee a room.
Would I recommend this hotel to my best friend?
I recommend this hotel for:
An amazing honeymoon, A romantic getaway, Girlfriend getaway, Older travelers, Tourists
I selected this hotel as a top choice for:
Museums / Cultural / Historical sites, Great food / Wine

Had a weekend break at Burythorpe House in November, strangely quiet little village, but when we arrived at the hotel we were not disappointed.
Great Food, Atmosphere, and very friendly staff.
Food, wine, service excellent, we will be back.
Having to leave
What a happy time we all had last week-end! We were looked after beautifully, and the food was EXCELLENT. Please will you thank everyone for giving us such a great final week-end.
The evening meal was probably one of the best meals we have both had. Many thanks to you!
Dinner was execeptional. We will talk to all our friends and colleagues about visiting you.
Charming hotel with excellent food and service.
Quite possibly the most beautiful hotel I have visited. Everything was perfect.
Members of staff were very pleasent and helpful making us feel very comfortable. Food was fantastic, better probably than any other hotel we have stayed in.
Lovely hotel, excellent service, friendly staff. We hope to return. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Everything about our stay has been wonderful. Setting, staff, meals and the tranquillity. Thank you
Service excellent, food excellent, hotel gorgeous.
The most beautiful hotel surpasses one's expectations. (the room, the food, the service and general ambiance) Burythorpe House is one of those. I can't complement you enough, it was truly remarkable.
Great pool, great food, great staff, great everything.

What a lovely weekend you gave us, thank you. The hotel looked lovely, the rooms were so comfortable and all of your staff were delightful. Dan, the feasts that you gave us were fantastic, what on paper looked like good English fare, were tarnsfoemed into a gastronomic delight. Everything was delicious so thank you.
